There are nearly one million people in jail in the United States for non-violent activities related to the use, possession, cultivation, transportation or sale of marijuana. The purpose of this site is to make available a place for everyone who supports the idea of Nojailforpot to sign his or her name, and make it proudly public for everyone to see. The people below have taken the significant step of putting their names to this important declaration, for all the country to see.

Let's stop imprisoning non-violent people for self consensual acts. That is the true Reefer Madness.

Why do we jail non offenders? Marijuana has been around for years, our own first president smoked it, grew it and sold it. If it is such a crime, why does it grow freely, and why were our troops introduced to it in a time of war? Pot is not the addictive drug most people see it as, and if you need proof, think of it as this: how many people do you know that has overdosed on prescription Valium, how many have overdosed on prscription Xanax, then ask yourself how many people have overdosed on marijuana? Most people that do smoke marijuana are responsible citizens with no intent of committing a crime, and even people that don't smoke marijuana see no harm. I had rather know that my friend driving me to town had smoked a joint than to know that they had just drank a couple of beers or a gin and tonic. If the law is so intent on going after drug sellers then by all means go for it, but don't class marijuana as a drug. After all, some of our recent presidents smoked, but, lest we forget, they didn't inhale, so I say the same thing, I smoke, but, I don't inhale, it just slides down my throat. By the way, I have cancer and without marijuana I couldn't survive. Vickie

it is sad that so many lives of responsible citizens in our "free" country, people with good jobs, voters, parents, and people with hopes and dreams, are ruined because of the mistakes of the government concerning drug use and abuse. Hundreds of thousands of non-violent drug offenders, a large amount of them casual pot smokers that were unlucky enough to be caught relieving their stress, alleviating their pain, or enjoying an evening with friends, are rotting in jail while their lives waste away. Some of these people do not even need rehibilitation because they are casual smokers. For those that are badly addicted, of course there should be treatment instead of jail! Just as AA or gamblers anonymous treat addicts of legal activities, so it should be with pot. A friend of mine, facing possession charges, confided in me that the worst thing that the judge could do would be to sentence him to jail time. I inquired why, and he said, " i have never been in trouble before. I go to church, i pay my taxes, i even drive the speed limit. going to jail will do nothing but instill in me how to live on the street...how to make easy money...how to kill if i need to defend myself. and then, when i am done spending all my time with the trash of society and learning from them, i must return to normal life." The United States should takes some cues from its UN counterparts. Everyone knows that the war on drugs has not done at all what it set out to do. it is mislead and misinformed and the only thing keeping it in place is the United State's pride. They just cannot admit they were wrong after spending billions of taxpayers money.

Marijuana is used by people who know what they're doing, and if not, will most definately hear about it from people and the media. If they want to overdo it and screw up their life with it (which does not apply to all users), they should be allowed to go ahead and do it, as long as it's non-violently and does not harm anyone else. Being a user does NOT make you automatically an abuser!

There are a growing number of states which are pro medical marijuana and yet our own government (notorious for insisting states decide things for themselves) persists in treating the voters like ignorant children. I am embarrassed to be an American especially with this hokey neo-Nancy Reagan 'War Against Drugs' limping on. In light of the rampant dissatifaction with the American government (a vast majority of citizens don't trust our leaders) it seems marijuana legalization could prevent a lot of future problems with pissed off, fed up, stessed out, citizens. Hell yes, I'm a Libertarian. Legalize Marijuana NOW!

I don't understand why people can't smoke pot, after all it is grown from the earth just like tabboco, plus it isn't as harmful. I think the goverment is scard that if it is leggel then they would be losing money from all the people who seat in a jail for something so stupied, plus it would make them all look so stupied.

I pay taxes, love my country, and I don't hurt anyone! I think marijuana use should be legal to mature adult smokers. It is plain to see more people support marijuana than those who oppose it. I read a poll's results that basically said legalizing marijuana would not raise the use of it. The number one reason for those who choose not to smoke was they just are not interested in it. They just didn't want to. That's legal so using it should be too. There are no reported deaths fro marijuana use unlike alcohol. Go to www.norml.org for more information on the poll.

I think that just because marijuana frees your mind, that the government shouldn't deny us of it. God never said that you could tell us what we can and cannot do in the privacy of our own homes. It's plain ridiculous.
